This project was to extend one off sessions we delivered to a group that met regularly at The Deaf Cultural Centre in Ladywood for their community café every week. We wanted this project to extend what was offered to support deaf and hard of hearing people within the local community. Since the pandemic many of the vital services to keep people connected had been cut and regular attendees to the centre weren’t accessing as frequently. The aim was to develop a partnership to find out more about the community and how this project could support creativity, confidence, and general wellbeing. Our starting point was introducing them to new stitch techniques and other mixed media techniques including printing and felt making so they could develop and practise new skills. We delivered 15 workshops throughout the length of the project enabling us to get to know a group of people really well. This project was all about co design and open partnership and was developed with each participant in mind following where their interests were. They loved to stitch so each week they could create something different including purses, fabric wreaths, felt pots and Christmas decorations. Over the length of the project, we changed direction many times, allowing everyone to get the most from their experience.
